About Arlington
Introduction to Arlington

There is no city of Arlington in Virginia. Arlington is a county. It is a booming suburban community of diverse neighborhoods, lots of leisure activities and important monuments and memorials.

Located just across the Potomac River from the District of Columbia, Arlington offers easy access for exploring the past and present in the National Capital area. Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) is located south of the Pentagon in Arlington and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is only 25 miles southwest of Arlington. Another bonus: eleven Arlington Metro subway stations provide fast, safe and easy transportation throughout the capital area. Come along on a sample tour of sites to see in Arlington.

Hop on the Metro blue line to Arlington Cemetery. This is not a quick visit. There is much to see and much to remember. Walking the shady paths among over 260,000 small gravestones brings a deep appreciation for the sacrifices our military men and women made in the name of freedom. At the Tomb of the Unknowns, guards and Change of Guard Ceremonies leave a lasting impression. Visitors watch in respectful silence as the guard on duty takes 21 carefully measured steps, faces the Tomb for 21 seconds, and then another 21 steps. The 21 steps and pause represent the 21-gun salute, the highest military tribute. The John F. Kennedy Gravesite on a hillside overlooking the cemetery yields a panoramic view of the city. A tour of Arlington House, the home of General Robert E. Lee and a visit to the Women in the Military Service of America memorial are also important sites with Arlington Cemetery. Nearby, the Iwo Jima Memorial honors the World War II battle site where more than 5,000 Marines died. Round out the day with a visit to Theodore Roosevelt Island and Memorial. Cross the bridge to the island sanctuary for birds and small animals and ponder the granite tablets sharing Roosevelt’s thoughts on the importance of nature and the country.

Once you’ve had your fill of monuments and monuments, Crystal City and Pentagon City are a shopper’s paradise. Savor exotic cuisine from around the world at Arlington restaurants, bistros and cafes. Arlington is filled with surprises and special moments. And…there’s still the world of Washington just across the river.

When to Visit Arlington
The most comfortable times to visit Washington are in spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). The official tourist season runs from April through September. It's a good idea to buy advance tickets to popular attractions during this period because the queues can be monstrous. Summers are hot and humid, especially in July and August. If you can bear the heat, this can be a good time to visit, as business travel to DC slumps and accommodation rates fall accordingly. Snowman aficionados may get a kick out of winter. If you plan on being in town for the city's biggest events - the Cherry Blossom Festival in March, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in June and Independence Day in July - book ahead.
